âMood changes are common, and I see a lot of depression and a total loss of confidence.â
Magnesium is also important for our stress response. Itâs best absorbed through the skin using a magnesium chloride spray oil or by taking an Epsom salt bath. Magnesium helps to balance blood sugar, soothe nerves, and draw up minerals essential for bone health. The latest studies show that stress and anxiety can take a toll on our bones, something we definitely donât need at this time.
Lastly, many women notice reduced tolerance for alcohol. Red and rosé wine tend to stimulate adrenal glands more than other alcoholic drinks. Try natural wines or organic wines without sulphites.
Protect your liver
The liver processes toxins and breaks down hormones, so reducing alcohol, sugar, and refined carbohydrates will help liver function. Supporting the liver is fundamental for good breast health and for reducing insomnia, hot flashes, headaches, and night sweats.
Many women take milk thistle to support liver function, and essential fatty acids help, too. Dandelion is another great tonic for both the liver and kidneys.
Emotional support
Mood changes are common, and I see a lot of depression and loss of confidence. I prescribe flower essences for emotional issues and to promote well-being. Woman Essence, by Australian Bush Flower Essences, is a blend to help with focus, ease worries, and balance female hormones, while Purifying Essence helps with drug side effects, detox, and with clearing negative thoughts.
You may also find yourself grieving for times past, for children youâve lost or children you couldnât have. Regrets also surface about relationships. We also experience isolation and self-blame. These are big issues that need support. Talking helps, and I might refer clients to a spiritual healer, bereavement counselor, or creative writing class as extra ways to work through things. Menopause is a huge transition on many levels.
During my own menopause, I found my thoughts going back to a time in my twenties when, as a young mother, Iâd experienced a big shock; I realized that now that my children were older and fending for themselves, the protective maternal part of me could finally relax. Insights like this helped me transition and appreciate how far Iâd come. I believe this is the gift of menopause: The wisdom that comes can be a tool to support others.

WITH AILSA HICHENS, NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST
There are many herbal remedies indicated for tackling symptoms of menopause and, if you canât or donât want to take HRT, finding the right remedy for you can be a good way to help you get your symptoms under control. However, tempting as it might be to buy up the whole menopause aisle to try and find a solution, you donât want to go from zero to âtaking everything I found in the shop.â Instead, have a look at the suggestions that follow and pick the herb that you think will work best for the symptoms that worry you most. Take at the dose suggested on the label for at least eight weeks and see if you notice a benefit.
